Game of Claw

Two nights ago, I saw drunk students throwing bicycles in the canal.

This morning, I saw city workers playing a lifesize game of claw to retrieve them
As of now, I have the police non-emergency number on a post-it (0900-8844) next to my computer. If I see the students again, I might be able to get the police to scare them off with a casual cruise around. This may lead to less prizes for the city workers but maybe it is time to change the rules.

    1. Hi- Yes, it was next to Webster on the Boomgracht, a few canals away from the Oz pub. The students are usually lazy as well as drunk, so they just toss bicycles that are nearby.

  3. Yes, so probably mine just got stolen...that´s sad!
I´m a student but I just don´t get the thrill about throwing someone else´s property away...thats very mean...

Now I have to find another second hand bike...I noticed you posted some stores that sell them, but do you have an opinion of whhich of them would be the best?

Thank you so much...and again, congrats on the great blog...I love the stories and pics.

    1. Stolen.. or taken by the city if you parked illegally, but they don't usually do that at night.

Do you want something cheap? Most of the bicycle stores can have good or bad selections, the stock turns over very fast. Second Life Bikes near me is very good and I hear good things about Budget Bike. Guus just opened on the Apothekersdijk. The train station stores sells well conditioned bicycles but at much higher prices.

    2. Sorry- my recommendation would be to shop around until you find a bicycle you like!

    3. Surprisingly, I had good experiences in finding decent affordable bikes at De Klokpoort, located appropriately enough on Klokpoort. Surprising as they are a full-service upmarket bike seller, but they have a small but decent selection of second hand bikes in excellent state of repair for reasonable prices, with warranty.

  4. Ohhh thanks a lot!
Actually I don´t know where to check to know if they took my bike because of ilegal parking (but i doubt that was the case because several other bikes were still there). Do you know where I could go to find that out???

    Thanks so much!

    1. There's a city property where they store the removed bicycles, according to the website:

To get your bicycle back, you can visit Willem Barentszstraat 20, Monday - Saturday and pay the €26 euro fee.

      There is also a phone number, (071) 516 5503.

And there's a website you can search for photos. http://www.fffw-leiden.nl/pages/SearchBikeOnPhoto.aspx
