One Year in the Netherlands!

I moved here one year ago!!

I can't believe it has gone by so quickly... and that I'm still so terrible at speaking Nederlands.

However, I do enjoy fresh herring and I am less afraid of gnomes... so the year has had some impact :)

Here's the table again from my recent visit to pick up my renewed permit from the visa office in Rijswijk.
No disembodied hands this time!
The gnomes are alright.

  1. Congrats! Especially on getting used to the gnomes.

Except now that one that sneaks up on you with a hidden knife won't scare you enough for you to jump out of the way, and it'll get you! :)

I could really go for some fresh herring right now, actually. Mmmmm.

  2. I just discovered your blog. I love it!

As a young American who lived in NL in the mid-80's (Pre-interent...I would have so had a blog), I picked up Dutch quickly. The key is to live in a vrij huis with lots of Dutch students. Also, when I went into any store, the store employees would always start speaking to me in English. I would stop them and tell them that I didn't understand as I was from Hungary. They would oblige and speak to me in Dutch.

Watch the Dutch shows and listen to Dutch music. Make an effort to read the newspaper too. It really helps.
